Link Popularity Strategy & Search Engine Submission

Link popularity has become increasingly important among the search engines. Because link popularity goes hand in hand with search engine optimization, it is important for any company with a web presence to build a link development strategy.

Many online marketing specialists believe that link popularity is simply obtaining as many links as possible. However, the quality of the link holds more "weight" than the quantity of links. You will get better results in the search engines if you have link popularity from sites that have considerable traffic.

To develop popularity for your web site, you should submit your site to the most visited directories. Yahoo (of course), LookSmart, About.com, and Open Directory are examples of major directories. That's one of the reasons that we think a listing in Yahoo is essential.

Obtaining links from other web sites is not enough to obtain long-term results on both the search engines and directories. People have to actually click on those links to your web site and browse your web site. AND they need to return to your web site when they see the quality content, products, and/or services that you offer, i.e. the usability of your web site. That is the definition of "popularity" according to the major search engines and directories. Other terms for it are "click" popularity or "click-through" popularity.

Therefore, both link popularity and click-through popularity are essential for obtaining optimal search engine placement.

Remember, a search engine position is not permanent since the search engine companies change their algorithms all of the time. Being listed in directories and other sites can significantly drive traffic and sales, particularly if your site is listed in specialized directories (health, financial, and travel, for example).

Search engines hate tactics intended to fool them into awarding high

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION - Tips, Techniques and Strategies

1. Do NOT use Frames, Flash, Javascript, Image Maps, or Dynamic URLs.

2. Optimize for correct keyword phrases. > Be specific, think like your target audience, look at competitors pages, and optimize each web page.

3. Optimize your title tag. > We recommend that your title tag be between 50-80 characters long - including spaces! The length that the different search engines accept varies, but as long as you keep within this limit you should be ok.
> We recommend that you include 1-2 of your most important keyword phrases in the title tag, BUT be careful not to just list keywords. 7. Optimize inbound links.

There are a few basic tips to optimize your website for search engines

First and foremost, search engines will "like" your website if it has good content. If your webpage looks like spam, modern search engines are smart enough to treat it like spam.

Do not generate replicated content (within your site or replicated upon multiple sites). All good search engines are smart enough to recognize this (see previous tip).

Get quality websites to link to you. Search engines will see this, and take notice. Do not use link exchanges, sign guestbooks with links, etc. While it doesn't penalize you (since you can't control what other websites have), it does not help you at all.

Whatever keywords you are targeting, use them on your pages.

For the keywords you are targeting, use them within the title tags. Search engines look at this a lot, so this is pretty key.

Use anchor text on links that point to your page with keywords you are targeting (both internal and external sites).

Along the same lines as the last tip, if you have images that click to pages, use the ALT parameter within the tag, and include whatever keywords you are targeting.

Generally, use common sense and stay away from trying to trick search engines (cloaking tricks for example). It can get your site penalized or even banned from the search engines.

Critical steps to take before submitting

After developing a Web site and selecting the best hosting company, don't rush out and submit it to search engines immediately. A Web site manager would be wise to take a little time to:

Fine tune the TITLE tag to increase traffic to the site

Improving the TITLE tag is one technique that applies to just about all the search engines. The appearance of key words within the page title is one of the biggest factors determining a Web site's score in many engines. It's surprising how many Web sites have simple, unimaginative titles like "Bob's Home Page" that don't utilize keywords at all. In fact, it's not unusual to see entire Web sites that use the same title on every page in the site. Changing page titles to include some of the site's key words can greatly increase the chance that a page will appear with a strong ranking in a query for those key words.

Create gateway pages that are specific to the focus of each site

Key word selection must be done carefully with great forethought and understanding of the search engine's selection criteria for key words. The larger the number of key words that are used, the more the relevance of any one key word is diluted. One way to get around this is to create gateway pages.

Gateway pages are designed specifically for submission to a search engine. They should be tuned with a specific set of key words, boosting the chance that these key words will be given a heavy weight. To do this, several copies of a page should be made, one for each set of key words. These pages will be used as entry points only, to help people find the site, therefore, they don't need to fit within the normal structure of the site. This provides the page developer with greater flexibility in establishing key words and tags that will encourage a stronger ranking with the search engines. Each gateway page then can be submitted separately to the search engines.

Ensuring that site technology won't confuse the search engines

Often the latest technology being built into a site can confuse the search engine spiders. Frames, CGI scripts, image maps and dynamically generated pages are all recently created technology that many spiders don't know how to read. With frames for instance, the syntax of the FRAMESET tag fundamentally changes the structure of an HTML document. This can cause problems for search engines and browsers that don't understand the tag. Some browsers can't find the body of the page and viewing a page through these browsers can create a blank page.

Today only 2% of browsers don't support frames, but many search engine spiders still don't support them. A search engine spider is really just an automated Web browser and like browsers they sometimes lag behind in their support for new HTML tags. This means that many search engines can't spider a site with frames. The spider will index the page, but won't follow the links to the individual frames.

Setting up a NOFRAMES section on the page

Every page that uses frames should include a NOFRAMES section on the page. This tag will not affect the way a page looks but it will help a page get listed with the major search engines. The NOFRAMES tag was invented by Netscape for backward compatibility with browsers that didn't support the FRAME and FRAMESET tags.

Performing a maintenance check

All Web sites should be thoroughly tested using a site maintenance tool in order to catch errors in operation before customers are brought to the site. HTML errors can hinder a search engine spider's ability to index a site, it can also keep a search engine from reading a page or cause it to be viewed in a manner different from how it was intended. In fact, a recent report by Jupiter Communications suggested 46% of users have left a preferred Web site because of a site-related problem. Finding the best submission service

Selecting a search engine submission service requires careful thought and important decisions. Using an auto submission service is a good place to begin. Most search engines like Alta Vista, HotBot and InfoSeek automatically spider a site, index it and hopefully add it to their search database without any human involvement. Some engines, like Yahoo, are done completely with human review and for many reasons are best submitted individually. Chances are good also, that in the first submission a site will be rejected by several of the engines and will need to be individually resubmitted. There are several online resources for auto submissions. The best ones won't submit a site to Yahoo where the customer is better served doing this on his own.

Understanding the waiting periods

A variety of waiting periods must be endured with each search engine before there is even a hope of being listed. Knowing and understanding these waiting periods before beginning the process can eliminate or at least minimize frustration and confusion. Typical waiting periods for some of the more popular engines are six months with Yahoo; one to two months with Lycos and 4-6 weeks with Excite or is that 4-6months? What they say and what happens in reality can be very different.

To improve site rankings and increase understanding of the listing process, there are many tasks that can be done on a regular or semi-regular basis. Optimizing rankings within the search engines is also to help ensure that a site attracts the right traffic.

Data contained in log files is an excellent resource for identifying which engines are sending the majority of traffic to a site. It can also show which key words or gateway pages are generating the strongest traffic and what are those visitors doing when they enter the site.

Conduct a search of the search engines to analyze where the highest rankings of the site have materialized and what keywords are generating the best rankings. Different search engines use different rules to rank pages. Individual gateway pages should be created based on the knowledge and interpretation of what each search engine is using to determine top rankings. Several pages can be tested out on one or more engines and the pages that have the most success can be kept, while the unsuccessful pages can be dumped or revised to achieve a higher ranking.

Each search engine uses different rules to determine how well a Web page matches a particular query. As a result, building a single page that gets a good score in all the major engines is just about impossible. Resubmitting the site

For engines that reject a site or don't list it high enough, it is strongly recommended that more information is learned about the engine's criteria before resubmitting. This information should then be incorporated into gateway pages or key word revisions in order to have greater success with subsequent submissions. Fine tune the page (or pages) make adjustments to TITLE tags and META tags, then after resubmitting the site, track the results to further learn about the engine's criteria and which adjustments made an impact on the rankings. Don't be afraid to experiment, take some risks and gather data as you proceed.

Checking log files for traffic being directed to erroneous pages on the site

This is good news!! Don't dump these pages or remove them from the search engine as most people will do when they redesign their site. Any page with a high ranking is of value. If a page is bringing traffic to a site, leave that page on the search engine, don't change it but rather redirect the traffic to valid pages in the site.

Getting Noticed

For small to medium-sized Web sites, search engines are the most important source of traffic. Unfortunately, getting noticed in the search engines isn't an easy job. A Web site manager can spend months getting a site listed in an engine, only to find it ranks 50th in their search results. It's hard to give universal tips for improving search engine ranking because each engine has its own set of rules. In general, though, a page will rank well for a particular query if the search terms appear in the TITLE tag, the META tags, and in the body of the page.

Search Engine Tips

1. Use a tag line or slogan on your front page. It should be a practical sentence with your top keywords in plain text near the top of the homepage.

2. Organize your website logically in outline form. Your front page should only provide links to the main topic groups. Each of those topic groups pages should provide links further down in the outline. Don’t go below three sub topics, though. Neither visitors nor search engines will drill down that far. To ensure that your entire web site is completely crawled by search engines, consider creating a site map for the search engines to follow. Click here for a free HTML index generator. 3. Group like elements together in sections and provide information about the relationships between them. State the main topic of a paragraph either in the header or in the first couple of words. Focusing on your keywords as the topic of a section, use headings and subheadings to group long pages into blocks. Use header tags such as H1, H2, etc. Headings, subheadings, column headers and page descriptions are all excellent ways to feed engine spiders clues about the page theme and they help users scan content or listen to a page using special-needs software. Studies show people scan related items in groups before moving on.

4. Provide keywords in text-based hyperlinks such as "Please click here to learn more about keyword" provides subject clues and helps the user stay on track while maneuvering around the site. Using standard hyperlink underlines is always a good idea because it's what users expect.

5. Use common language that users will recognize quickly while scanning a page. Keep your strongest keywords and most important information in the top-middle of all pages.

6. Adding captions above or below graphics both to aid users and search engines. Use keywords if possible. Adding text to the alt tag behind an image (using keywords, of course) is a good way to provide additional information about the image. This is a great aid to those who surf with images off or use screen readers - not to mention the benefits provided to the search engines. Search Engine Tips:

Effective site design for achieving top ranking begins with careful planning and strategy, long before page construction begins. Here are the 4 most important components:

1. Keyword List:

You need to sit down and write out a long list of 'keywords' that are relevant to your site content (most important words first). Utilizing a word processor that has a 'character count' (and spell checking) feature will make your job a lot easier. These keywords will be in a 'META' tag embedded in the HTML code of your home page. Not all search engines use this tag, but it should be there for those that do.

The META tag is invisible to the visitor, but very 'visible' to the search engine robots that will 'spider' your site for indexing information.

We'll use an imaginary property and real estate company in Montana as an example.

It is important to understand that many search engines will penalize your listing if you try to 'rig' your submission with repeated 'keyword stuffing'; some important tips are:

-do not use too many keywords, 20 to 50 should suffice

-repeat primary keywords sparingly, NO MORE THAN 3 TIMES

-separate repeated words

-use two word phrases when appropriate, but watch out for repeats (note 'real estate' and 'for sale' below)


2. Site Description:

You should create a succinct core description of your site. It should contain most of your primary keywords and will be the content of another important "META' tag. Use as close to 150 characters as you can, but do not exceed.

Here's the example description:

For sale: land, property and acreage in Montana. Montana Property Co. is the #1 real estate broker for homestead, recreational and retirement properties

3. Site Title:

Your site title META tag is the text that appears in a list when your site is 'bookmarked' by a visitor. It is also what most search engines display as summary text during a search. Use about about 7 words.

Here's the example; note how the primary keywords appear in the text:

Homes, lots and Acreage For Sale in Montana

4. Opening Text of Page Content:

The very first visible element in your page should be text (contained in a header tag) that relates to the first three items - not large graphics, tables, or anything else. Do not use frames on your home page as some major search engines will not index your page properly.
Be sure to incorporate your keywords in the remainder of the text as well.

Finally, make sure your html code structure is correct. Many people get this wrong and the search engines will not index your site properly. The META tags MUST be between the HEAD tags.

How to make your web site more effective

You know that a high ranking is very important to get high quality
targeted traffic to your Web site. The more targeted your visitors
are, the more you'll sell on your site.

However, a high ranking alone is not enough. Many webmasters have the
problem that their visitors don't buy something on their site even if
the way the visitors reached the site indicates that they're
interested in the products.

For that reason, you use this article do to improve the effectiveness
of your Web site.

Make a good first impression. Before a Web surfer starts reading the
copy text on your Web page, your page must pass these three critical
points:

1. Your Web page must load quickly

Web surfers won't wait for slow loading Web pages. If your Web pages
don't load as fast as is possible, a lot of Web surfers will go away
before they have had a chance to take a look at your Web pages.

Don't forget that still the majority of Web surfers use a 28K/56K
modem to surf the Internet. If your Web page is 120 KB big (including
the images), then it takes 17 seconds to load the page. Would you
wait so long?

2. Your Web site must look good

Make sure that your Web site has a professional layout. People don't
want to purchase from a shady backyard business. It's very important
that your Web pages look perfect.

The same is valid for your link pages. If you want to exchange links
with other sites, make sure that your link pages look attractive. A
link on your link pages should be something other people want to have.

Make your link pages accessible from your other Web pages and use a
great layout for your link pages.

3. Don't use automatically generated doorway pages

Automatically created doorway pages might bring some visitors to your
site. However, they'll land on a Web page that was designed with
search engines spiders in mind.

Automatically created doorway pages usually look ugly to human Web
surfers. Often, they consist of nothing more than a list of buzz-
words. You won't get good results with this method because human Web
surfers will quickly close such a Web page.

If your Web site fails under one of these categories, Web surfers
will leave your site before you even have the chance to tell them
your marketing message.


How to keep Web surfers on your site

1. What you can do to keep these visitors on your site.
Your home page is the most important page on your site. It's the very
first page of your site and the page that people see first when they
come to your site. Therefore, it's important that your home page is
interesting for your visitors.

Every visitor wants to get a prompt answer to the question "what's in
it for me?" On the first paragraph of your home page, you should
tell
your visitors the following:

o what you do
o why people should stay on your site

If you don't answer these questions quickly enough, people will go
away.

If you don't tell them the major benefits of your product, no one
will take the time to dig into your site. Web surfers are a very
impatient group.

2. Don't annoy your visitors with animations they cannot see
Some people use Flash animations or big pictures with a meaningless
text such as "Welcome to the world of tomorrow" as their index page
that redirects to their actual first page. Don't do that if you don't
want to lose a big part of your visitors.

Flash intros take minutes to load on a slow modem connection so most
Web surfers will go away before they even had a chance to see your
actual home page.

In addition, Web pages containing only a Flash animation cannot be
indexed by most search engines. If you use a Flash intro as your
index page, chances are that your site will never show up on search
engines.

3. Respect people's time

Until high-speed Internet access becomes widespread, don't use large
bandwidth-clogging graphics.

As a rule of thumb, no single graphic should be larger than 30 KB to
50 KB, and no single page should have more than 200 KB of graphics.
If you must include a large, detailed image, provide your visitors a
smaller, thumbnail version so they know if seeing the larger image is
worth their time.

4. Test with different Web browsers

Not all Web surfers use Microsoft's Internet Explorer in version 6.
It's important to test your Web site with different Web browsers.

5. Be consistent

Professional Web sites always have their navigational bar at the same
side. They use a consistent style for headlines, headers and text.

Don't use more than three different fonts in different sizes.

Try to avoid colored or textured backgrounds. They make text
difficult to read. Of course, dancing buttons and blinking text don't
belong to a professional Web site, either.

How to calculate page rank

PR(A)=(1-d)+d(PR(t1)/c(t1)+..........+PR(tn)/c(tn))


d = the damping factor is the amount of your PR which you can
actually pass on when you vote / link to another site. The damping
factor is widely known to be .85.

PR (t1) = the pagerank of the page which links to you.

C (t1) = the amount of total links that (t1) has.


Imagine http://www.abc.com was linked by http://www.xyz.com link page
which had a PR of 4 and 9 other links, here's how the formula should
look like:

PR (abc) = (1-.85) + .85*(4/9)
PR (abc) = .15 + .85*(.4)
PR (abc) = .15 + .37
PR (abc) = .52

To sum up my site would get .52 PR after being linked from a page
with a PR of 4 and 9 other links.

We list them here, before you get into all the optimization tips, to hopefully save you from trying to list a site that that will be very difficult to get listed. Almost everything can be fixed or worked with one way or another before you submit. The most common problems are:

Optimizing for the Correct Keywords
To get listed correctly in the search engines each page of your site that you want listed needs to be optimized to the best of your ability. Since the keywords that you decide to target will be used throughout the optimization process choosing the right keywords is essential. If you choose the wrong keywords you will not be found in the search engines. If you are not found in the search engines how will anyone find your site?

Since the keywords you choose to optimize your pages with are so important we have put together some tips to help you make sure that you make the right choices. You should utilize these tips when selecting keywords for each page that you plan to submit to the search engines.

Think "specific keyword phrases" not "keywords". Why? Due to the extreme amount of competition for general terms in the search engines, if your keyword phrases are too general it is very unlikely you will rank well in the search engines. You stand a far better chance to rank well for specific phrases where there is less competition. The resulting traffic, since it is more highly targeted, should also be much higher quality too! Here's an example for a site selling shoes:

Try to think like your target audience. What would they search for when looking for the page you are optimizing? It is very easy to fall in the trap of coming up with a short list of what YOU would search for, but what about everyone else? They will not necessarily use the same keywords as you. You should try to come up with as many keyword phrases as you can think of that relate to the page you are optimizing. Try asking a few friends and family what they would search for when searching for a site like yours.

Check out your competition for ideas. Do a search using keywords that you already know you want to target and click through on the top sites that come up. Once on the site view the source HTML code and view the keywords they have in their meta tags - this should give you many more ideas! Make sure to only use keywords that relate to YOUR site or page. To view the HTML code simply click the 'View' at the top of your web browser then select 'Source', or 'Page Source'.


You should develop a list of keyword phrases, following the tips on this page, for each page that you optimize for the search engines.

Optimizing Your Title Tag
Without question the title tag of your page is the single most important factor to consider when optimizing your web page for the search engines. This is because most engines & directories place a high level of importance on keywords that are found in your title tag. The title tag is also what the search engines usually use for the title of your listing in the search results.



Where it belongs:

We recommend that your title tag be between 50-80 characters long - including spaces! The length that the different search engines accept varies, but as long as you keep within this limit you should be ok.

Tag tips:
We recommend that you include 1-2 of your most important keyword phrases in the title tag, BUT be careful not to just list keywords. If you just list keywords you risk being viewed as a spamming the engines which can ultimately lead to you being blacklisted by the search engines. Your title tag should include your keyword phrases while remaining as close to a readable sentence as possible to avoid any problems.
Make your title enticing! Don't forget that even if you get that #1 listing in the search engines your listing still needs to say something that makes the surfer want to clickthrough and visit your site.
Since the length of your title tag could be a little long for some engines we suggest placing the keywords at the beginning of the tag when possible so that you do not risk having them cut off.
Each page of your site should have it's own title tag with it's own keywords that related to the page that it appears on.

Optimizing Your Page Copy
The copy on your page is also very important in order to achieve better search engine listings. Actually, it is very close to being as important as your title tag so make sure you keep reading! By 'copy' we mean the actual text that a visitor to your site would read.

Did you know that just like a visitor to your site would read the copy on your page to figure out what you have to offer, the search engines do too? And what do you think the search engines are looking for when they 'read' your page copy? Keyword phrases, of course!

Page text tips:

For best results we recommend that each page you submit has at least 200 words of copy on it. There is some cases where this much text can be difficult to put on a page, but the search engines really like it so you should do your best to increase the amount of copy where you can.
This text should include your most important keyword phrases, but should remain logical & readable.
Be sure to use those phrases that you have used in your other tags (i.e. metas, alt, headings, title, etc.) during the optimization process.
Add additional copy filled pages to your site. For example, how-to articles, tips or tutorials. These types of content pages not only help you in the search engines, but many other sites will link to them too.
Don't ignore this tip! Seriously, optimizing your page copy is one of the most important things you could possibly do to improve your listings in the search engines. So, make sure you have plenty of it even if you need to redesign your site to work it in!

Optimizing Your Meta Tags
Meta tags were originally created to help search engines find out important information about your page that they might have had difficulty determining otherwise. For example, related keywords or a description of the page itself.

Many people incorrectly believe that good meta tags are all that is needed to achieve good listings in the search engines, which is entirely incorrect. While meta tags are usually always part of a well optimized page they are not the be all and end all of optimizing your pages. In the early days of the web people were able to get great listings from optimizing just their meta tags, but the increasing competition for good search engine listings eventually led to many people spamming the search engines with keyword stuffed meta tags. The result is that the engines have changed what they look at when they rank a web page.

The search engines now usually look at a combination of all the best search engine tips to determine your listings, not just your metas - some don't even look at them at all! What this means is that your page should have a combination of all our tips implemented on your page - not just meta tags. That being said, there are two meta tags that can help your search engine listings - meta keywords & meta description.

Tag limits:

We recommend that your Keywords Meta not exceed 1024 characters including spaces.
We recommend that your Description Meta tag not exceed 250 characters including spaces.
Meta description tips:

Make sure you accurately describe the content of your page while trying to entice visitors to click on your listing.
Include 3-4 of your most important keyword phrases. Especially those used in your title tag and page copy.
Try to have your most important keywords appear at the beginning of your description. This often brings better results, and will help avoid having any search engine cut off your keywords if they limit the length of your description.

Meta keywords tips:


Aside from what we mention in the other tips below you should only use those keyword phrases that you also used in the copy of your page, title tag, meta description, and other tags. Any keywords phrases that you use that do not appear in your other tags or page copy are likely to not have enough prominence to help your listings for that phrase.
Don't forget plurals. For example, a travel site might have both "caribbean vacation" and "caribbean vacations" in their keyword meta tag to make sure they show up in both searches.
If you know of a common misspelling of a popular keyword that could be used to find your site you should enter it in your keywords meta tag. For example, a travel site might use "caribean " in their keyword meta since it is a common misspelling for "caribbean".
Watch out for repeats! You want to include your most important phrases, but when doing so it can be difficult not to repeat one word many times. For example, "caribbean vacation" and "caribbean vacations" are two different phrases, but the word "caribbean" appears twice. This is okay to do in order to make sure you get the phrases you need in there, but becareful not to repeat any one word excessively. There in no actual limit, but we recommend that no one word be repeated in the keyword meta more than 5 times.
If your site has content of interest to a specific geographic location be sure to include the actual location in your keyword meta.

Optimizing Your Images "alt" Attribute
Did you know that any images on your page can help your listings too? Each image on your page can include a keyword phrase or two that relates to the image. This text will also show up & help those that may have their images turned off when visiting your site. This does not work for all engines, but it certainly does not hurt so we recommend you give it a try where you can.

Where it belongs:
You can add the "alt" attribute to any image on your page.

Tag limits:

We do not recommend using more than a brief sentence or two to describe an image.

Tag tips:

Be sure to use the keyword phrases that you also used in the copy of your page, title tag, meta description, and other tags.
Do not try to cram a bunch of keywords into the "alt" attribute. We recommend using no more than 2-3 per image.
Describe the image - do not just list keywords.
The "alt" attribute is also a good place for misspellings and plural keyword phrases that you may not have used elsewhere.

What you should not do. . . (spamming the search engines)
There are several things, considered "spamming", that you can do to try to get your page listed higher on a search engine results page. Basically, you should never try to trick a search engine in any way, or you risk being blacklisted by them. Since the majority of your traffic will come from search engines the risk far outweighs the benefits in the long run. Below is a list of the more common things we recommend that you never do when trying to achieve better listings.

Do not:

Do anything to trick the search engines into listing your site better. If what you are doing is not listed as one of our search engine tips the search engines will likely view it as spam and penalize you.
List keywords anywhere except in your keywords meta tag. By "list" we mean something like - keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3, keyword 4, etc. There are very few legitimate reasons that a list of keywords would actually appear on a web page or within the page's HTML code and the search engines know this. While you may have a legitimate reason for doing this we would recommend avoiding it so that you do not risk being penalized by the search engines.
Use the same color text on your page as the page's background color. This has often been used to keyword stuff a web page. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.
Use multiple instances of the same tag. For example, using more than one title tag. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.
Submit identical pages. For example, do not duplicate a page of your site, give the copies different file names, and submit each one. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.
Submit the same page to any engine more than once within 24hrs.
Use any keywords in your keywords meta tag that do not directly relate to the content of your page.

Optimizing Text Hyperlinks
Did you know that text based hyperlinks can help improve your listing in the search engines? The search engines basically figure that if you are linking to something from your page whatever it is you are linking to is likely to be closely related to the content of your page. For that reason some of the engines actually look for keywords in the hyperlinks and any text immediately surrounding the hyperlinks. What this means to you is that if you can you should include your most important keyword phrases in the link itself and possibly the surrounding text.

What it looks like:

A text based hyperlink is a standard HTML hyperlink like this one (the example link does not go anywhere).

Tag tips:
Try to include your most important keyword phrases within the hyperlink itself.
Try to include your most important keyword phrases in the text that immediately preceeds, or follows the the hyperlink.
Becareful not to keyword stuff! Make sure your links and surrounding text are still readable and make sense after you include a keyword phrase or two.

Although they are not used very frequently any longer HTML heading tags can help improve your listings in the search engines too. Since they are "headings" the search engines figure that they are very closely related to the content of the page that they appear on. So, just like with all of your other optimization efforts you should include your most important keyword phrases in heading tags on your page if you can.

Consider rethinking your page content. It is often very easy to take an existing page full of copy and find ways to break it up into separate sections with headings.

Follow these steps while you are planning for redesigning your
website.


• Redesigning your site periodically over time is a good idea.

• Times change, and with the changing times, new expectations
are set for design and interactivity of sites.

• If your site is already indexed on the major search engines,
then redesigning and relaunching the site will cause them to spider
and update your site automatically.

• If the scope of your site is changing substantially, then you
should contact Yahoo! and the Open Directory and request that they
update your site title and description.

• There are 4 basic rules that should be followed when
redesigning or rebuilding a site.

1. First, keep your domain name. Changing your domain name
erases the search engine footprint you have spent years to grow. It
also breaks the hundreds or thousands of back links from other
websites to yours, destroying your link popularity.

2. Second, keep your individual file names. For the same reasons
that you should keep your domain name

3. Don't change changing their file extensions from .html
to .asp, .php, or .jsp. Unless you absolutely have to change your
file extensions

4. If you're thinking that you just have to update the site

About getting indexed on Google

• GoogleGuy says that new web sites take time to rank well in
Google and other search engines. He also says that most newer sites
take time to build up PageRank.

• If you have your domain hosted on a shared server that also
provides other domains, there was always the fear that your domain
could be penalized when a domain on the same server was penalized.
Now GoogleGuy said that Google was smart enough to recognize virtual
hosting.

• Google does not penalize web sites that use pop-up ads.

About URLs on Google

• GoogleGuy recommends avoiding URLs on your web site that
contain an "id" parameter because "id=" usually marks a session ID.
For example, if your web site has page URLs like "www.your-
domain.com/index.php?id=xyz", then you should rename the "id"
parameter to something else.

• Top level domains, for example .com, .net, .org, etc., are
not a factor in Google rankings.

• If a search result on Google shows only the URL, and the site
description is missing, then it could be that the web site was down
when Google tried to index it.
