What's new in Palm webOS 1.4?

Sunday, February 28, 2010

The latest update to Palm webOS is now arriving on your phone via an over-the-air update. The update is now available for customers on the Sprint network in the US and on the O2 UK, O2 DE, O2 Ireland, and Movistar networks in Europe. [February 27: The update was released today for customers using the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus on Verizon Wireless.] The update is expected to be available for Palm webOS phones on other networks soon. Highlights of the latest update include:

* The ability to capture, edit, and share video: Not only can you easily shoot video footage from your Palm webOS phone, but you can also make quick edits and upload your footage to YouTube or Facebook (or send them via email or MMS) with just a couple of taps. See the video capabilities in action in the video below.

* Get more done faster: The Calendar, Phone, Messaging, and Email apps have all been enhanced with new features to simplify common tasks (many based on feedback from our customers). For example, in the Calendar app, you can now dial a number that appears in the subject of an appointment. In the Email app, you can now sort by date, sender, and subject. In the Phone app, the Call log offers more options to easily connect to a contact (such as via SMS). And there are some new shortcuts for zipping from one app to another (for example, moving from a chat view to a phone call with that person). You¹ll also see improved performance in these apps.

Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus on Verizon

Sunday, January 24, 2010

Palm revived back in the smartphone market with the announcement of the Palm Pre and web-OS a year ago. Also during the same time period, Palm unveiled a shrimp sized Pixi, unleashed nine over-the-air updates to its OS, fabricated and radiated a cluster of developer tools, including frequent releases of its SDK and an innovative web-based development environment.

Throughout the fluxes in the last months Palm make a comeback with a bang, constituting Sprint as its stag carrier ally in the US. Therefore, while the company was engrossed in tweaking and inventing its groundbreaking platform and devices, the third place accomplice has kept it from the larger audiences AT&T or Verizon. But now after almost a year Palm has exposed its innovative devices up to the country's giant carrier along with revealing the specifications and other attributes of its offerings. You will be amazed to know that now Pre offers an additional 8GB of storage and double the RAM, whereas Pixi comes equipped with WiFi.

Though there are not much physical differences in the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus from their sprint counterparts, both the devices offer amazing experiences to the users. In addition, compare to Pixi, the Palm Pre Plus has twice the RAM and storage capacity, a fast processor, a bigger and brighter screen.

In the Pre, the most noticeable is the removal of the "home" button from the front of the device, and a slender change to its keyboard making the keys a bit clickier and less gel-like. According to Palm, the users will be benefited from its hinge mechanism and the updated build quality of the phone. It will ensure that there are no issues to be found in the device. The Pixi Plus is a look-alike to its Sprint cousin.

Both the devices will be available next week with the Pre Plus selling for $149.99 after $100 rebate and 2-year contract and the Pixi Plus selling for $99 after $100 rebate and 2-year contract. Verizon also will charge you an additional $9.99 per month if you have selected the Verizon Navigator GPS service on your Palm Pre Plus or Pixi Plus. Sprint definitely offers an intelligible deal on the Palm Pre and Pixi when it comes to monthly service fees and provided services such as free navigation, NFL Mobile, and more.

The Palm Pre Plus has enhanced the Palm Pre with all the unique features and software updates. It won't be wrong to assert that the Palm Pre Plus is the best phone Palm has ever introduced because of its quality. It offers an excellent platform with enormous potential to change the way you work with your phone.

Paid Applications Coming to webOS in Europe

Tuesday, January 05, 2010

Following the launch of the e-commerce program in the U.S., we are excited to announce that the European e-commerce program is planned to go live in March 2010. The e-commerce program has been tremendously successful in the U.S., with about 600 new paid apps available in just 2 months, and the extension to Europe gives developers a compelling new opportunity to distribute and monetize their apps. In Europe, Palm Pre is currently available in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Germany, providing excellent opportunities for developers to do business in multiple large markets.

The general app catalog model is not new, but what we’re doing with it is. The Palm developer program extends the unique web orientation of the Palm webOS platform, providing developers innovative opportunities to leverage the web as a promotional channel for applications. We offer greater freedom and choice of how to get your applications to market and unparalleled control to promote and grow your business.

For developers looking to make money, it’s all about speed, promotion, and reacting to customer feedback. Our platform gives you greater access to customers and faster cycle times to make higher-quality, compelling applications.

Palm App Catalog is About to Reach 1000 Apps

Saturday, January 02, 2010

The Palm App Catalog had about 800 applications by mid-December, those of us using a webOS phone were pleased, but wanted more. So Palm is giving us more, so far we have reached 946 applications, my guess is that we might get to 1000 before the end of this year.

There are a lot of people, like small business owners, that would like to get more specialized apps on their Palm Pre or Pixi handsets. So let’s hope Palm is paying attention about that, so we can all get more apps. Now, not all the apps on the Catalog are for all the webOS devices, some of those apps work only on the Pre.

Also, the webOS users outside the US, don’t have access to all the 946 apps that we have, so it’s going to be a while before they can get as much apps as we have. But don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of useful apps in the Catalog already, as well as many free and paid games to get you by while waiting for the bus or subway. Thanks Palm developers, and please, keep them coming!

Palm Pre and Pixi Getting webOS 1.3.5 Today

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

Sprint will release a new version of the webOS for Palm's most recent smartphones very soon. This operating system update will bring a number of enhancements, including the ability to store more third-party applications.

Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein recently gave a preview of webOS 1.3.5. His comment that caught the most attention was a promise that it will allow users to hold put more software on their Palm Pre or Pixi. This confirmed an earlier leak, which indicated that the next version of Palm's OS will let users use all of its internal storage capacity for holding apps, if they want.

Rubinstein went on to promise better Wi-Fi performance, and better performance from the Pixi.

Coming Today:-

Sprint's support website says that webOS 1.3.5 will be distributed starting today. This site also reveals some of the enhancements included in this update.

  • Improvements in battery life optimization when in marginal coverage areas.

  • QCELP capability fix will allow users to play and audio of video sent via MMS.

  • Tapping an address from contacts will launch Google Maps or Sprint Navigation.

  • Users can now download over 2G connections, when necessary

Curiously, Sprint's description of this update makes no mention of the increased capacity for storing third-party software.

Coming to a Pre and Pixi Near You:-
This carrier says it will begin pushing this update out to Palm Pre users over the air today. Users will be notified when it arrives.

This update is reflected on the Android, iPhone, and webOS operating systems. Blackberry, S60, Windows Mobile and everyone else are left, once more, out in the cold. Webkit win!

Get ready for Premium Palm App by Mid-September

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Palm is now ready to accept the apps for consideration in the Palm App Catalog e-commerce beta program. The program has been launched to test the experience for webOS app developers and users. The program will be open to all developers later this year. Presently its app catalogue contains roughly 30 applications.

Starting today you can submit your apps via email for consideration. Palm will take 30 percent of any revenues earned from sales in the online store, through which apps can be purchased by webOS users via credit card. Palm will accept apps into the beta test program based on the following criteria:

  • Apps should be useful and engaging to users.

  • They need to have an appealing design and user interface aligned with Palm UI guidelines.

  • They are written specifically for webOS and not delivered through the browser.

  • They leverage webOS platform and device capabilities, for example, notifications, multitasking/background processing, location services, accelerometer.

  • They have acceptable performance and response time on the device; apps with slow UI response or sluggish performance will be rejected. Applications that consume excessive power on the device will also be rejected.

In its blog post announcing the beta, Palm offers details of the program:

  • Developers can submit both free and paid applications for evaluation.

  • You can charge a one-time fee for the download of your application.

  • Initially, the user base for e-commerce will be limited to the United States.

  • Developers will receive 70 percent of revenues generated through application sales (less applicable sales taxes).

  • webOS users will pay for their application purchases using credit cards and will download apps directly to their webOS device.

Palm's Pre Is Trying to Live Up to the Hype

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Palm's road to a comeback is hitting a few speed bumps.

When Palm (PALM) launched its Pre smartphone on June 6, expectations were high that the long-troubled company could have a hit with the device, the biggest launch by the new management team led by a former Apple (AAPL) executive. Now analysts estimate that Palm likely will sell just 300,000 to 500,000 Pres in their first three months on the market. That's not bad, but it's short of the outsize expectations ramped up by the phone's advanced technology and splashy debut.

The modest sales performance for the Pre, which sells for $199 with a two-year contract from Sprint Nextel (S), is raising questions about Palm's ability to land other wireless carriers to offer the phone, and how large the carriers' subsidy payments and marketing support for the Pre might be. "Some carriers will be looking through less rose-tinted spectacles than before, [and] expectations will be pushed back" for the Pre, says Neil Mawston, a director with tech consulting company Strategy Analytics. "If Sprint can't prove that the Pre is an iPhone killer, it'll really affect the level of subsidies" carriers pay to make the Pre cheaper in stores.

Palm webOS 1.1 enhances support for enterprise -- and beyond

Friday, July 24, 2009

Pre” and “business” just got a lot friendlier! Today we released Palm webOS 1.1, which brings several additions to our support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), including remote wipe, PIN/password requirements, inactivity timeout, improved certificate handling, and more. You can find more details about how Palm webOS fits into your business environment here.

In addition to these treats for business users, Version 1.1 also includes a few other goodies for everyone -- like support for emoticons in the messaging app, and the ability to set “person reminders” in the contacts app (next time you get a message or phone call from that person, a message pops up showing you a reminder to ask them about their vacation in Maui -- cool, huh?). Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That’s right -- you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).

For a list of the new features of Palm webOS 1.1,take a look at the release notes at www.palm.com/webos-pre-sprint-en.
