Blackberry Can Now Read E-Books

Amazon says that demand from users led to the development of a software e-reader for BlackBerry.Amazon launched on Thursday (18/02/2010) an application for BlackBerry Kindle. Thus, users of smartphones from Research In Motion (RIM) now have the functionality to read digital books purchased by Amazon’s online store, and synchronize them with the reader Kindle and other devices that support the e-book.
With the launch of the BlackBerry line joins the iPhone and iPod Touch that already have the application. The software also is available for Windows PCs. Amazon has plans to take the same product for Mac and the newly launched iPad.
Electronic books purchased by Amazon’s site can be downloaded to the Kindle via the wireless technology Whispersync. By launching applications Kindle, Amazon paves a way to sell as many books as possible. According to the company, the idea of bringing the application to BlackBerry refers only to meet user demand.

BlackBerry to get Gmail syncing?

Seems there is no shortage of BlackBerry Internet Service information these days. The BIS 3.0/3.1 documents contain a few long awaited changes. The folks over once again tipped off to more BIS 3.0 information. 
After having looked at the files, some of what we had learned from the last leak was once again confirmed. Check out the run down.
Nice updates most importantly out of all of it would be the GMail, Open Office and WMA support as I see it. The email validation and settings is something that some users will appreciate especially first time users, those familiar won't even likely notice until it comes time to change a device. Can't say I like having to wait for all these changes to happen but it's good to know they are coming. Now how about a new browser since I didn't really have an issue with the email before?

The BlackBerry Magnum video lasts just under the tow minute mark and the reviewer emphasises the BlackBerry Magnum is a real BlackBerry with a clicking screen for any doubters out there, and that RIM has tried to keep the style of the BlackBerry Magnum similar to the old style BlackBerry Bold.
He then compares the BlackBerry Magnum up against the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and BlackBerry Bold 9700 noting the Magnum is similar to the 9000 whereas the 9700 has a changed up keyboard.

Verizon to offer prepaid BlackBerry service?

Verizon will offer a prepaid BlackBerry data plan within the next three months, according to an unnamed source that is said to be historically reliable. The plan will cost $35 on top of a voice plan, though no other details are known at this time. It is likely that only certain BlackBerry devices will be eligible for the prepaid data plan, but this is again unconfirmed.
Thus far, Verizon offer only four handsets in its prepaid scheme, with none of them true smartphones. Three are flips, while one is a candybar, and the prepaid plans are based on daily access rather than a monthly one, as at many other carriers.
Prepaid BlackBerries are increasingly common at other carriers worldwide, most recently Wind Mobile in Canada, but are rare in the US. Most American carriers typically encourage more lucrative monthly smartphone plans that often cost about $70 per month.

This Blackberry handset is said to be the successor to the Curve 8900. The set sports a stylish look with new trackpad. And, the BlackBerry OS 5 would make it more interesting to play with.
Though, the exact look and features are yet to be released, but it is expected to be a CDMA version or like the Samsung Omnia HD i8910. However, nothing much is known about this Blackberry set.

Android and iPhone racing for customers

A new study reveals that Google and Apple are in a sharp race for smartphone demand. Among the Americans wanting to buy a smartphone between November and February, 20 percent plan to get and iPhone 3G or 3GS, while 17 percent want to buy an Android phone. Both categories are more specific when it comes to buying a high-end device, 14 percent of them opting for an iPhone 3GS, while 8 percent would buy a Motorola Droid.
BlackBerry is still leading in customers’ demand with 51 percent of those buyers aiming to purchase a RIM phone, but the preference for a particular model is not similar to the competitors’ situation. About 18 percent of BlackBerry customers would buy the least expensive model, the candybar Pearl. The touchscreen Storm and Storm2 demand is situated at 13 percent, but 4 percent are planning to buy a model of the high-end Bold and 3 percent are opting for its CDMA model, the Tour. Other platforms are trailing, just 2 percent aiming to buy a Palm Pre or the Windows Mobile-based AT&T Tilt.
The request for Android devices have dramatically increased compared to August when there was a lack of Android phones that left the entire group at 7 percent. Apple instead has had a steady demand and has lost only a single percentage point during the period between mid-summer and mid-fall.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 finally on sale in Telstra

RIM's long awaited Bold 9700 has finally arrived in the Christmas season to compete with other smar-phones available in the market. The Blackberry Blod 9700 adorns the similar look and feel except being pretty smaller than the original. It is available from today on the Telstra Next G network from Telstra Shops, dealers and online.
The successor to last year's Bold 9000, the new device sports the latest BlackBerry 5.0 operating system. The companion to the Bold 9000, it comes with added capabilities such as 3G HSDPA support and an optical trackpad.
It also features an optical trackpad below the screen which acts like a laptop touchpad in certain applications, such as the web browser. Also it comes in a lightweight package. The optical trackpad allows you to glide your finger across a trackpad square, as opposed to having to roll around the trackball, originally launched with the BlackBerry Pearl and seen as its white glowing “pearl” at the time.
Research in Motion (RIM) recently informed it has included support for the Mac OS X operating system in the BlackBerry Bold 9700. The phone will be available on an $85 per month plan over 24-months. Rival merged carriers, 3 and Vodafone, are set to release the handset on December 2.
Telstra’s Executive Director of Product Management, Ross Fielding, anticipated the 9700 a winner with business customers and consumers given the Bold 9000’s growing popularity.
For consumers, Fielding suggested that: “Consumers are demonstrating a real appetite for smartphones and we think the BlackBerry Bold 9700 will be popular with these customers. BlackBerry’s seamless email on-the-go experience and the ability to personalise each phone by downloading and running a range of social media applications like Facebook and Uber Twitter are amongst the features we expect will appeal most to consumers.”
For business users, Fielding informed that: “Lighter and more powerful, the new Blackberry 9700 has a full keyboard and push email service which will help customers stay connected to their email, office calendar and the mobile internet. Teamed with Telstra’s Next G network it provides outstanding smartphone performance in more places.”
“A premium finish and a high build quality are carried across to the new model. Battery life continues to be outstanding giving customers the range they need to stay connected on longer trips.”

RIM has unveiled BlackBerry Media Sync 3.0, a PC application that can sync photos in both directions in addition to music.
The new app lets users pull files and folders down from the PC to the BlackBerry, and optimize photos for the device along the way (allowing for more storage). It also lets users pull photos off the device, and pops up an alert whenever new pictures are detected.
As before, BlackBerry Media Sync also syncs playlists and random music lists, works with iTunes and Windows Media Player, and works with any recent, media-capable BlackBerry smartphone.
BlackBerry Media Sync 3.0 will be available for download beginning at 12:00 PM ET at www.blackberry.com/mediasync.

Verizon now selling the BlackBerry Curve 8530

It might not be fancy or scream “look at me”, but Verizon’s now-available BlackBerry Curve 8530 is a smartphone that gets the job done. Kitted out with a 2.5″ display, 2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and 256MB of flash memory, the Curve 8530 is also the first full-QWERTY BlackBerry from Verizon to feature RIM’s new optical trackpad and OS 5.0.
Other than that, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Stereo Bluetooth, support for microSD cards and dedicated multimedia keys round out the rest of the phone’s features. Of course at $99.99 on contract there are a lot of better smartphones that are similarly priced, but for BlackBerry lovers fond of Verizon and always looking to save a bit of coin, you can’t really go wrong. Plus it comes in two colors: Black and Smoky Violet (imagine the color of your grandmother’s ugliest pant suit).

BlackBerry Messenger 5 is now available

RIM has finally updated BlackBerry Messenger program. Thank goodness, the previous version felt old a few years ago. The 2.4MB update brings a wealth of new features like the ability to create an avatar, adding friends by scanning a bar code, group messaging, and the ability to share multimedia with multiple contacts at once. Plus, it looks a hell of a lot better. This program of course is meant just for communicating with other BlackBerrys using each phone’s unique PIN.
You have two install options: either navigate to www.blackberry.com/messenger via your phone’s browser to initiate the OTA download or find the program in App World. Be warned though, the program requires a reboot to finish the installation.

New SDK for BlackBerry Widgest Uses CSS, HTML and JavaScript

Research In Motion is offering the BlackBerry Widget Software Development Kit (SDK) to enable third party application developers to build applications for BlackBerry smartphones using common web technologies.
The new BlackBerry Widget SDK allow developers to create web-based applications for BlackBerry smartphones with advanced features and functionality, a capability available for BlackBerry applications written in Java(R) earlier.
A BlackBerry Widget uses the BlackBerry Browser engine to render an application's user interface using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Developers can easily use existing web content to create BlackBerry Widgets and can extend the capabilities of their web applications using BlackBerry Widget APIs.
Using the new BlackBerry Widget APIs, developers can, for instance, create seamless interaction between a widget and the BlackBerry email and calendar applications, create widgets with the ability to view or edit files and documents stored on the smartphone, access location-based services or the media player, and more. Developers can also take advantage of RIM's unique push technology, enabling dynamic widgets that can run in the background and provide proactive alerts to users in a timely manner.
"BlackBerry Widgets open up a world of opportunities for developers to build and bring to market web applications for BlackBerry smartphones that offer advanced, integrated functionality and an always-on user experience," said Alan Brenner, senior vice president, BlackBerry platforms at RIM. "We are very excited by the prospects of this new widget development platform which combines the ease of development of standard web languages with the rich functionality of Java development."
Support for BlackBerry Widgets will be available on BlackBerry smartphones that run BlackBerry OS 5.0, which will include an enhanced BlackBerry Browser with support for Gears, SQLite and the new BlackBerry Widget APIs.
BlackBerry Widgets can be easily distributed over-the-air, via BlackBerry App World or through BlackBerry Enterprise Server in corporate environments.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager Hitting the Mac Oct. 2

We reported earlier that BlackBerry would be delivering its Desktop Manager software for Mac in September of this year. Keen readers will note that, in fact, that was not the case, since it is now the last possible day for that software to appear, and that software isn’t coming.
It is, however, going to arrive just a little outside of the originally announced release window. On Oct. 2, which is this Friday, BlackBerry customers who are also Mac users will finally be able to enjoy equal status with their PC counterparts. About time, RIM. Be honest, you were just holding a grudge about the iPhone’s success, weren’t you?
As of this Friday, you’ll be able to use BlackBerry’s own software to sync contacts, calendar items and appointments, notes and task from sources such as iCal, Address Book, and Entourage, among others. You can also add and remove software downloaded via BlackBerry’s App World using the Desktop Manager, which is good news for people who’ve been trying to manage their fledgling collections all via the device itself.
BlackBerry users will also be able to sync playlists from iTunes, so long as the format is compatible. Last time I checked (just last week), the Tour still didn’t play back .m4a files. It recognized them and was able to retrieve track information, but it wouldn’t actually play them.
People with RIM devices will also be able to schedule and encrypt backups for their phones, and install software updates from the desktop. BlackBerry Desktop Manager is designed to run on OS X 10.5.5 and above. BlackBerry devices used with Desktop Manager for Mac must be running OS 4.2 or higher. Set your alarm for 10 a.m. PDT on Friday, because that’s when the download goes live at the official BlackBerry site.

Enhanced Google Mail Plug-in Now Available For BlackBerry!!!

IM has announced via their BlackBerry Support Forums that the Enhanced Google Mail Plug-in for BlackBerry is now available!
The Enhanced Google Mail™ plug-in for BlackBerry® smartphones introduces an advanced level of email service integration for BlackBerry smartphones. It supports additional Google Mail™ features that provide BlackBerry® Internet Service subscribers with broader access to their Google Mail accounts while on the go. The Enhanced Google Mail plug-in is optional. Existing and new Google Mail integrations will continue to function without it.
Features:
Synchronization only happens from your BlackBerry to your Google Mail account, meaning some changes made through your Google Mail account won’t sync to your BlackBerry. Your BlackBerry must be running at least OS 4.5 (get your latest OS here) in order to download the Enhanced Google Mail plug-in, and your Google Mail account must be associated with BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) through your carrier.
Once you associate your Google Mail account you will receive a PIN with instructions on how to download the plug-in. If you already have your Google Mail accounts associated with your BIS you will need to re-associate them. In addition, your Google Mail account must have IMAP enabled, not POP.

RIM Plans for Flash & Silverlight Support for BlackBerry

According to the Boys Genius Report, Research In Motion has plans to update its browser and future BlackBerry devices by adding Adobe Flash and Microsoft Sliverlight support. The future versions of the Blackberry browser (based on the same Webkit framework as Mobile Safari, and Android's Chrome browser) will have FULL Flash support and Full Silverlight capabilities.
With Flash being one of the most sought after features this can only be taken as extremely good news for BlackBerry owners, as at present there are no workarounds or even third party apps that will allow Flash video content on BlackBerry devices.
We all know that when RIM proposes something or plans something, it probably means it’s a while away. According to a BGR's source this won’t happen until next summer as RIM needs to add some time due some to technical restrictions on the current handset offering from the company. RIM than will have access to higher data speeds for this to work effectively (HSPA and LTE). RIM has already achieved over 10Mbps downloads on next generation BlackBerrys in the test labs with test LTE equipment so it’s looking good, folks.
Fierce competition is expected ahead with the presence of other smartphones in the market. As earlier BlackBerry gets a lot of criticism for not producing a browser experience on par with the likes of iPhone. The introduction of this full-blown version, along with Silverlight support can act as a differentiating factor with the iPhone.
The news is likely to scare operators around the world into how they will deliver the possible millions of video and high data streams that flash integration will allow.

RIM Partners With Airtel for Blackberry

Research In Motion, has partnered up with Bharti Airtel, Asia’s leading integrated telecom services provider, to offer BlackBerry phones to its subscribers. RIM ( Research In Motion) has launched the new BlackBerry 8520 Curve smartphone in India. The new BlackBerry Curve 8520 is offered at the attractive price of Rs.15,990. And will be available nationally from Airtel’s authorized outlets through Bharti Teletech Limited across India on August 7th.
The new Blackberry is enabled with advanced media player for music, pictures and videos. The phone is aimed at youth and consumers looking for messaging / email , social networking , music and entertainment. Blackberry Desktop software coming to your Mac in September. BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac will be available as a free download from BlackBerry.com. It allows you to do pretty much everything you can do using the Desktop Software for Windows package currently available.
The Mac desktop software will finally let you sync your iTunes playlists, calendars, contacts, notes, and tasks with your mobile device. In addition, you can install new software packages, if you’d rather not use App World to download them to your device directly. You can also add and remove applications, update your device as soon as new software is made available, backup and restore data from your device, and have the option to manage multiple devices.
In addition to a brief overview of the features of the new Desktop Software for Mac, Andrey at Inside Blackberry (the company’s official blog) also posted screenshots of the application in action. It looks a lot like their official Media Sync solution for Mac, but with a lot more options, as you’d expect from a program that does so much more. And it’s nice to see that RIM is paying attention to the desires of its users, as Apple-loving BlackBerry users have been clamoring for just such a program for years.
The new software will debut in September. it’s nothing revolutionary, but for Mac addicts who need their BlackBerry fix, it’s a welcome change to no longer be considered second-class BlackBerry users.

RIM Launching A BlackBerry Social Network For Venting Tomorrow

Perhaps you’ve noticed that apps aren’t exactly flying off the virtual shelves in BlackBerry’s App World store, like they are in Apple’s App Store. The store is hard to navigate and there’s confusion about several of the apps, are the main complaints we’re hearing (along with memory issues). And RIM hopes to alleviate some of those problems with the launch of its own social network for BlackBerry users tomorrow, we’re told.
The network, called MyBlackBerry, gives device owners a social profile where they can share opinions on their favorite apps, accessories as well as tips and tricks they use on their devices. More importantly, they can also vent about all of these things with fellow users, and RIM will be there to listen. The whole thing looks more like a bulletin board than what you might consider to be a traditional social network nowadays, but that’s probably a good idea to streamline it and make it all about information.

Google launches push services on BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES)

Google Apps Connector for BES is a piece of software developed by Google that sits on the BES and pushes your Google services to your BlackBerry. The software allows users to access Gmail, Google Calendar and Contacts using the built-in BlackBerry applications they already know and love.
This latest news from Google is intended to help small to medium sized businesses save costs on email services, while improving the overall BES email experience. Users can now instantly receive Gmail messages within the built-in email client on their Blackberry and they can continue to use the same shortcuts to manage their BlackBerry messages.
Although the calendar currently only supports 1-way syncing, 2-way syncing is on the way. This represents the Google mentality of launching a product early, as soon as it is functional for a large group of people. Research found that only power-users are looking for 2-way sync, and that the majority of BlackBerry users use their device for read only functionality.
Users can also access the email addresses and phone numbers of their co-workers using a company wide Global Address List. Both personal and business contacts saved on Google Apps are automatically synchronized over the air to users’ BlackBerry devices and integrated into the native Blackberry applications.
It was important for Google to make the transition for IT administrators easy. Admins are given full control of the solution and can continue to manage BlackBerry devices using the BES. Google Apps Connector installs on the BES, connecting it to the Google Apps cloud and synchronizing email, calendar and contacts for all users.
Google Apps Connector for BES is currently in beta testing with select companies and universities, and will be available free of charge to all Premier and Education Edition customers this July. Those of you who enjoy the Gmail experience with conversations, labels and full search capabilities can continue to use Gmail for Mobile.
