Google’s Android To Hit 150,000 Apps By Next Year!!
Saturday, December 26, 2009
In fact, the Android Market may have as many as 150,000 apps by the end of 2010, according to Flurry, a mobile-application analytics firm, which merged with Pinch Media yesterday. In November, Apple said it had around 100,000 apps for the iPhone, which completely overshadows the 12,000 Android apps in existence. In an interview with Bloomberg, Flurry CEO Simon Khalaf said: “A lot of developers have come onto the Android platform” because of efforts by Verizon Wireless, Motorola and Google to promote the system.”
Flurry estimates that while Google will have between 100,000 and as many as 150,000 by the end of 2010, Apple could have 300,000. A handful of recent examples of applications that have moved from the iPhone to Android include: Evernote, CitySearch and Photobucket.
Many developers have held back making apps for the Android platform because it was unclear how big of a market it would become. That won’t be much of a question in 2010. Next year, Forrester Research is estimating that Google Android will take 10 percent of the mobile device market due to “heavy industry support” from Qualcomm, Verizon, Motorola, Google, and others.

Super Monkey Ball 2 Finally Coming to iPhone
Saturday, November 21, 2009

Super Monkey Ball, the iPhone game that set the $9.99 ceiling price for several major game titles that followed is expected to have a sequel launched just in time for holiday. Sega has announced that "Super Monkey Ball 2" will debut with 115 new levels, a local Wi-Fi multiplayer option, highly improved graphics and, most notably the game will feature an enhanced control system.
Despite the huge commercial success of the original game when it launched for iPhone in July of 2008, micro-gamers were critical of Super Monkey Ball's control sensitivity. Causing major frustration for avid users accustomed to rocking the little balled wonder ape on home consoles.
"After playing a late build of the sequel, it seems they've made real strides in the controls," said Arnold Kim for TouchArcade, "In particular, I found turning to be much more precise than in the original."
Mini-games are also expected to be added to Super Monkey Ball 2 with the first game being Monkey Bowling, later followed by Monkey Golf and Monkey Target that will be added as free updates in early 2010. Currently Super Monkey Ball is on sale for $3.99. No price has been announced yet for Sega's long overdue sequel. (sneak peek video after the break).

Apple Overtakes Nokia As Most Profitable Handset Maker
Thursday, November 12, 2009
“With strong volumes, high wholesale prices and tight cost controls, the PC vendor has successfully broken into the mobile phone market in just two years,” said analyst Alex Spektor in the research note. It is not all bad news for Nokia.
Even with falling profits, it managed to capture 37.9% market share and ship 16.4 million handsets in the third quarter. Strategy Analytics said that focusing on the U.S., Apple’s high-profit home turf, will be the key to recovering in 2010, but that won’t be an easy fight. Nokia’s profit margin for its handset division has been shrinking during the entire 2009 global economic downturn, and the handset-maker is also facing increased pressure from Google Android devices and other new high-end smartphones planned for the rest of the year and into 2010.

Apple opens its first retail store in France
Saturday, November 07, 2009
France's first Apple store opens today at 10AM CET. This is a prestigious location to be sure, right across the famous inverted pyramid inside the Louvre museum
. Just for that it would be worthwhile to visit this store, which spans two floors. 150 employees work in the store to offer the same services, which have made the Apple Store experience a success all over the world. The first 5000 visitors will receive a limited edition t-shirt.
This year, close to 170 million people visited Apple Stores on four different continents. Apple has already opened 277 stores in 10 countries: France, U.S., UK, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Canada, Japan and China.

Apple Earnings up on strong iPhone, Mac sales
Tuesday, October 20, 2009
Mac sales jumped 17% from the same quarter of 2008 to 3.05 million units, 250,000 units above market estimates. iPhone sales rose 7% to 7.4 million, just below the market expectation of 7.5 million units. Notably though Apple said that it was struggling to meet demand for iPhones globally, a suggestion that the figure may be limited by supply as opposed to demand.
Net profit rose to $1.67 billion/ $1.82 a share, up from from $1.14 billion/ $1.26 a share for the September quarter of 2008. The market had been expecting $1.42 a share. Revenue rose 25 percent to $9.87 billion. Gross margin of 36.6 percent, up from 34.7 percent a year ago.
The figures are a huge boost for Apple after many analysts had expected them to take a bigger hit due to the global financial crisis. Apple’s Mac line, still the biggest earner for the company has continued to steam ahead, despite of (or perhaps because of)its premium pricing.
AAPL shares rose 7.5% to $204 in after market trading, smashing its previous price high of $202.96 in December 2007.

Apple's App Store passes 2 billion downloads
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
The App Store now contains over 85,000 applications, in 20 different categories, which are downloaded by more than 50 million customers in 77 different countries, according to Apple. The apps themselves are created by more than 125,000 registered developers, who receive 70% of the revenue from their creations whilst Apple keep the other 30%.
"The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone," Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, said of the news. "The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it."
MediaMemo have put this into perspective, doing some calculations on the figures released by Apple. In the first year of the App Store 1.5 billion apps were downloaded, averaging at 4.1 million downloads per day. Since then the next 500 millions app downloads have occurred within 76 days, averaging at a huge 6.6 millions download per day. They also say that the paid-for apps generate estimated sales of $200 million per month; with Apple keeping their 30% of this, that equates to $720 million a year.
Apple's iTunes music store is still eclipsing the app store, however, with sales of songs recently passing the 8.5 billion mark. The iTunes Store is said to account for over 70% of online digital music sales worldwide and the App Store is said to be the biggest applications store in the world.

Apple sold 30 million iPhones, served 1.8 billion Apps, iTunes sold 8.5 billion songs
Monday, September 14, 2009
"I'm very happy to be here today with you all," he said, before thanking Tim Cook and his executive team for the support and how well they ran things in his absence.Anyway, on to other things. The first revelations include that iPhone's new milestone; it has sold 30 million units in its two years of availability. It's dedicated App Store has 75,000 applications available for the device and has so far served a whopping 1.8 billion downloads. If updates were to be counted too, it would be "a few times higher," according to Phil Schiller.
The iPhone 3.1 OS is also ready, and includes among its features, a port of "Genius", which will now be used to recommend what application you might like. It will be available as a free download from today. The recent rumor about record labels offering pre-made ringtones is also true; over 30,000 pre-made ringtones will be available for $1.29 each.
As for iTunes, the store is now available in 23 countries and boasts more than 100 million accounts with credit card details. It has sold 8.5 billion songs since it was launched.

Apple iPod nano: Shoots Video
Thursday, September 10, 2009
Apple unveiled the new iPod nano with upgraded capacities: 8GB and 16GB. Major new features include a video camera that can store H.264 video with a 640 x 480 at 30fps resolution and a larger 2.2-inch LCD with a 240 x 376 resolution (204 PPI). I’m not sure if you can use this video camera to take pictures.I’m guessing it does but there is no mention of it on Apple’s iPod nano site. Other things that are new:- Polished anodized aluminum finish
- FM Tuner
- Nine colors: Pink, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Grey, Silver
- iTunes Tagging: Use the click wheel to tag the song and iTunes creates a list of all your tagged songs so you can preview or purchase them when you sync.
- Live Pause: Want to pause the radio? Now you can. Rewind live radio? Sure, up to 15 minutes.
- VoiceOver: Tells you the title and artist when you click the click wheel or on the new earphones with the controls and mic.
- Voice Memos: There’s a built-in mic, of course, so you can record voice memos now.
- Pedometer: Uses the built-in accelerometer to act as a pedometer and works with the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit.
If the iPod nano can only take videos, this is an interesting development. The nano can take videos but not pictures. The iPod touch can take pictures but not videos. The iPhone 3G can take pictures but not videos and the 3GS can take both pictures and videos. I’m guessing that soon enough Apple will make it so that all the next-generation iPod nano and iPod touch devices will be able to take photos and videos.

Vonage iPhone App Blessed by Apple
Friday, September 04, 2009
“Vonage is currently conducting a beta test and general availability will be announced at a later date,” the company said in a statement Wednesday. “This new service, along with the recent launch of the Vonage World unlimited calling plan, continues Vonage’s heritage of using innovative technology to create significant value for its current and future customers.”
This announcement arrives shortly after Apple rejected the official Google Voice app and pulled all of the third-party applications for the service from the App Store. It did take a while for Vonage to get approval, but Apple's reasoning was that Vonage needed to fix a few software issues. Apple have previous approved various other VoIP services (as long as they only work over WiFi and NOT 3G). The approval of Vonage is sure to further confuse developers, and to stir up even more ire in Google Voice fans.
A clear limitation of an iPhone Vonage client, however, would be the users' inability to receive Vonage calls on the handset. Since the iPhone doesn't support applications running in the background, a friend calling your Vonage number would not reach you on your iPhone.

Apple May Be Highest Grossing Fifth Avenue Retailer
Tuesday, August 25, 2009
At Fifth Avenue and Fifty-Ninth Street, the noon-day line on Aug. 11 snaked out the front door. More than a dozen people waited to buy an iPhone, which runs from $99 to $299, plus at least another $70 a month for a service plan. Every computer, seat and station was occupied by a visitor to midtown Manhattan.
Apple, based in Cupertino, California, increased revenue at its stores by 2.5 percent in the first six months of the year to $3 billion as the rest of the retail industry suffered. During the same period, sales at all U.S. retailers fell 9.2 percent compared with the first half of 2008, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.
Retail sales in New York City have fallen 8 percent to 10 percent from comparable 2008 levels, according to the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book business survey published July 29.
“Even if they are not spending money elsewhere, people are still spending money on technology gadgets,” said Patricia Edwards, a retail analyst and founder of Storehouse Partners LLC in Bellevue, Washington. “It’s both a need and a want. It fulfills that retail-therapy component.”
Apple’s store performance in the last year has been driven by the iPhone, according to Charlie Wolf, an analyst who covers Apple at Needham & Co. in New York. The retail operation saw a 22 percent increase in traffic during the quarter ended June 27, hosting a total of 38.6 million visitors, Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said on a conference call in July.

Top Mobile Phones
Sunday, August 09, 2009
1. BlackBerry Curve (83xx series and 8900)
2. Apple iPhone 3GS (both 16GB and 32GB versions)
3. BlackBerry Pearl (81xx series not including the Pearl Flip)
4. Apple iPhone 3G (8GB and 16GB versions)
5. BlackBerry Bold
6. BlackBerry Storm
7. T-Mobile G1
8. Palm Pre
9. HTC Touch Pro
10. HTC Touch Diamond
From what we can gather this is going to change a lot as a ton of Androids are expected to come out in the 2nd half of the year. From some quarters we have heard that there are over 18 Android phones in the pipeline. And the Mytouch which came out last week has had stellar reviews. My analysis is that in 2010 it will be a face off between Android and iPhone for the Consumer market and Blackberry of course has a lock on the Business market. And I am sure that Microsoft is going to come back competitive. They simply cant afford to ignore this market. The Palm Pre is a great OS, it simply needs some decent carrier and nice application and it should give the other smartphones a run for their money.
Let the competition begin!

Apple Silences Google Voice On the iPhone
Thursday, July 30, 2009
According to a Google spokesperson speaking to TechCrunch, Apple received the app submission from the internet search giant six weeks ago, and “did not approve the Google Voice application.” Apple has bandied about the feature duplication defense before, when they rejected Podcaster prior to releasing their own integrated podcast direct search and download section to the iPhone’s iTunes store.
Unless Apple somehow plans to introduce their own built-in Google Voice support in the near future, a scenario which I find highly unlikely, then this particular use of the feature duplication line is completely ridiculous. Google Voice isn’t actually duplicating anything, it’s only reducing AT&T’s ability to make money, which suggests that the wireless provider has much more control over Apple and their approval process than I previously suspected.

Apple's New Tablet Set to launch in 2010
According to the report, the device features a 10-inch touchscreen, with 3G data and a custom ARM processor instead of the previously considered Intel Atom processor. The device will be positioned in that empty spot between smartphone and laptop in Apple's product line.
The device is expected to retail for somewhere between the cost of a high-end iPhone and Apple's most affordable Mac notebook.
But the analysts believe that the 10 inch touch-sensitive screen, could disrupt the laptop market as much as the iPhone turned the mobile phone industry on its head when it was launched two years ago.

WSJ Article - Developers lost in a sea of Apps
Wednesday, July 15, 2009
Developers say the key to succeeding on the App Store is to appear on the lists of top-ranked apps that Apple compiles. The 25 most downloaded apps appear on the first page of the store when someone accesses the site from their iPhone. People also find apps through keyword searches or by browsing categories.
"If it appears in the top 100, then everybody will see it," said Vijay Chattha, head of VSC Consulting, a San Francisco marketing firm that is launching a business to help iPhone app developers promote their wares.

Apple Adds Online Purchase of IPhone 3G for New Customers
Thursday, May 14, 2009
It's been a long and bumpy road for buying the iPhone 3G online. When the device was first launched in July 2008, the only way to get your hands on one was to go in to your local Apple Store or AT&T outlet. In September of last year, Apple started letting customers use its online store to reserve an iPhone at their local Apple Store; the process worked for both those customers new to AT&T as well as existing subscribers. But you still had to make a trip to your local brick-and-mortar to get your hands on the unit, and availability was not guaranteed.
Last December, AT&T started offering online purchases of the iPhone and since then it has also, from time to time, sold refurbished units. Regardless of where you purchased the iPhone, however, you were still required to sign up for a two-year commitment with AT&T.
By contrast, in 2007 the original iPhone was available for sale online at the same time that it arrived in stores. The was made possible by the ability for customers to activate their iPhones via iTunes at home; with the iPhone 3G, Apple and AT&T in most cases insisted upon activating the unit in the store.
Despite the addition of online purchasing Wednesday, there are still some restrictions. For example, while new customers can have their iPhones delivered, the process doesn't currently accommodate existing AT&T customers; they can go through the sign-up process online, but they will still have to pick up the iPhone at a retail store.
As always, we expect this to provide ample fodder for Apple conspiracy theorists on both sides: those who will claim that this illustrates an attempt to boost unit sales that were down sequentially last quarter, and those who will point to this as an obvious indication that Apple is clearing out inventory in advance of introducing a new model this summer.
While it does seem likely that there's some reason Apple chose to do this now, we're inclined to believe that the wheels of progress grind exceedingly slow, especially when AT&T is in the mix.

Nokia and Apple go head-to-head with latest app store plans
Monday, May 11, 2009
Nokia told Forbes magazine that Ovi Store will have 20,000 apps at launch, making it the second largest after Apple's. This will certainly top Android Market's launch with just 50, and RIM's with a few hundred, though is well short of the iPhone's current tally. Key differentiators, says Nokia, will be a heavy focus on entertainment and video; the ability for users to personalize the choices with which they are presented; and extensive use of the store to distribute new Nokia software updates as well as apps.
Meanwhile, despite its popularity with users, the App Store continues to excite controversy among developers. The latest way that Apple has succeeded in getting their backs up is the announcement that it will only now review applications that are compatible with iPhone 3.0 as well as the current iPhone 2.2.1 OS. Any software currently in the Store that does not run properly on 3.0 will be removed, Apple told programmers on Thursday. iPhone 3.0 will be released to the public some time this summer, probably with new phone models too.
According to ArsTechnica, many developers are concerned. Apple said existing apps should run on the new OS without modification, but many have found otherwise, and fear their wares may be ejected from the Store even before 3.0 devices appear. One fear expressed by various programmers is that the move from 2.x to 3.0 changes parts of the ABI (application binary interface), which could cause problems for software that uses static libraries built using the 2.x toolkit.
To make matters worse, until developers are released from non-disclosure agreements about 3.0, they cannot put apps in the Store that are based on the new OS release or use 3.0 specific features, threatening a hiatus period in revenue terms until the unspecified date when the new platform goes live.
In other Apple news, a recently spotted job ad suggests Apple may be planning a PC with embedded 3G, and possibly even a netbook, despite scathing remarks made about the form factor by Steve Jobs and other Apple executives. The ad calls for a quality assurance engineer with experience in "3G and/or Wireless WAN".
And AT&T is reported to be planning to cut the iPhone's monthly services plan by $10 when new models appear, to keep it competitive against a wave of new upcoming phones. This would make the entry level data service plan for the device $59, down from $69, and reduce the cost of the two-year contract by $240. Currently, AT&T subscribers spend $1,856 over the life of their deal. The new deal could accompany a much rumored cutdown iPhone or 'iPhone Nano'.

AT&T Introduces 'myWireless Mobile' App.
Wednesday, May 06, 2009
An app like this is long overdue, and it's honestly a little boggling that AT&T didn't already have something like this ready back when the iPhone was first launched. While the tardiness is annoying, AT&T looks to have produced a very useful app that will allow their legions of iPhone customers to access their myWireless service with greater ease than ever before.
myWireless Mobile will include the ability to make one-touch payments, as well as view their voice and data use for the month. Users will also have the option of upgrading or otherwise altering their service plans from the Mobile storehouse. Plan holders will be able to view individual phone data/call usage, as well as see the group's total usage.

Apple tops J.D. Power's list for smart phone customer satisfaction
Saturday, May 02, 2009
And that why it's good news that research company J.D. Power and Associates on Thursday ranked Apple number one among manufacturers of smart phones. In its 2009 Wireless Consumer Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study - Volume 1, J.D gave Apple 791 points out of 1,000, 40 points ahead of the industry average, and 19 points ahead of LG, Apple closest competitor. Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry smart phones, scored 739 points.
The study lists the key factors for residential smart phone owners were ease of operation (30 per cent), operating system (22 per cent), features (21 per cent), physical design (18 per cent), and battery function (9 per cent).
J.D. Power also found that smart phone users reported sending and receiving an average of 17 e-mails per day using their phones, and 82 per cent of owners said they regularly use personal information management features such as address books and to-do lists to stay better organised.
The company conducted its study between July and December 2008, with 2,648 smart phone users who have owned their phone for less than two years.
In November 2008, J.D. Power also ranked Apple number one among business smart phone users.

New iPhone 3.0 OS Beta 4 Comes With iTunes 8.2 Pre-Release
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
The new iTunes pre-release is stealing the spotlight this time around, thanks to a mention in the “About iTunes” legalese of Blu-ray among other formats mentioned in conjunction with Gracenote, the software used to gather track information when CDs or other media are played back in Apple’s media jukebox app. Many are speculating that this could foretell the coming of the sometimes maligned video disc format to the Mac platform.
Before you get too excited, though, realize (as Gizmodo points out) that the same legal content in iTunes 8.1.1 (the current version) didn’t list DVD, so the inclusion of Blu-ray doesn’t necessarily indicate anything. Unless, of course, it indicates an upcoming ability to play back (folding DVD Player into iTunes and getting rid of the separate app) and/or import from both sources, in addition to CDs. Now that’s tantalizing.
On the iPhone side, there are some nice new features that I actually am really happy to finally see included. The “Store” menu that showed up in previous builds, but that didn’t actually have any content, now lets you sign in and out of your iTunes account, and view and change your account payment details and credit card information. The less dependent on iTunes the iPhone becomes, the better, in my opinion, and this virtually cuts the cord. Now we just need wireless syncing.

Yes, iPhone Apps Make Money
According to Flurry, iPhone applications can and do make money. Not all apps make it, of course, but those that do can actually make good money. A strong publisher with two titles a month can expect $10 million to $15 million in sales through the iPhone channel, if the titles are well-marketed, says the report.
But "well-marketed" is the key word here. The iPhone app industry is beginning to resemble the music industry with its "hit-driven" nature. One "hit" gets a developer on the map and gives them the chance to sell more apps. Successful apps often resemble successful songs: you need a good artist, a good producer, a strong distributor, and plenty of promotion.

Amazon Kindle 2
Monday, April 20, 2009

When the Kindle came out a year ago, it was well received but was also criticized for not being good enough. The Kindle 2 released by Amazon a little while back appears to have fixed that.
- The Kindle have revolutionized reading and this Wall Street Journal article explains how
- Here is the definitive verdict on the Kindle from NYTIMES David Pogue
Is there anything which could pose a threat to the Kindle. Why the Iphone of course. And the Kindle App on the iPhone specifically. The NYTIMES Bits Blog disects the App.
And the computerworld reports that book sales on the Apple iPhone App seems to be skyrocketing. Either way, Jeff Bezos comes out a winner.
And the future of newspaper - This businessweek article suggest that it would be cheaper for NYTIMES to give each subscriber a kindle and access the NYTIMES than to deliver a physiscal paper.

Apple just launched the iPhone 3.0 SDK
Tuesday, March 24, 2009
i) Over 1,000 new APIs, the new SDK version for iPhone provides you with an amazing range of technologies to enhance the functionality of your applications. New APIs also provide support for applications to communicate with hardware accessories attached to iPhone or iPod touch.
ii) Apple enabled the SDK to allow for subscription and native app purchasing - This will allow for a variety of business models on the iPhone to be enabled. With new release, developer can now charge users AFTER they have downloaded an application. "In-App Purchase" will allow developers to sell updates to their applications. This is not enabled for free applications.
