Nexus One, which runs Android 2.1 and Motorola Milestone known as Droid, which runs on Android 2.0.1 has become an august platform to illustrate the rich and highly technical features of Google Earth. Nexus One carries a lot of performance in a slender package.
After a lot of touches and experiments, the app is ready with the bouncing features for Android. This is the fastest mobile version of Google Earth yet, with a smooth frame and a beautiful 800 x 480 screen.
With the release of Google Earth for Android, Google has also introduced the Roads layer, a very prominent feature of the desktop version of Google Earth. Thus, giving you a better sense of where you are with road labels drawn on top of the satellite imagery.

Android and Apple's iPhone OS were the fastest-growing smartphone platforms in 2009, with sales of the iPhone OS overtaking those of Windows Mobile, research company Gartner said Tuesday. Symbian and Research In Motion's BlackBerry still lead the market, it said.
Worldwide sales of smartphones running Symbian totaled 80.9 million in 2009, up from 72.9 million a year earlier. Because total smartphone sales grew faster, to 172.4 million from 139.3 million a year earlier, Symbian's market share declined to 46.9 percent, Gartner said. Second-place RIM's market share rose to 19.9 percent from 16.6 percent in 2008.

Microsoft's smartphone OS dropped to the fourth spot as its market share fell from 11.8 percent to 8.7 percent, and sales dropped by about 1.5 million phones. The launch of a new version, Windows Phones 7 Series, appears to make it a more competitive platform, but as phones based on the rewritten OS won't show up until late this year, sales will continue to struggle during most of 2010, according to Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner.
Android was only the sixth largest smartphone platform in 2009, with a market share of 3.9 percent. However, that looks likely to change soon. Android phone sales really started to pick up during the fourth quarter. Four million out of a total 6.8 million units were sold during the last three months of 2009. Sixty-nine percent of those were sold in North America, driven by Verizon Wireless's promotion of the Motorola Droid, Cozza said.
While the smartphone market is booming, total worldwide mobile phone sales of 1.2 billion units were down about 1 percent compared to 2008.

Google Earth Arrives in Android Market

When Google announced the Nexus One last month, it also showed off Google Earth for Android for the first time. And now, it's finally available. Looks like it's an Android 2.1 app (it doesn't show up in the Market on my 2.0.1 Droid), and pinch-to-zoom is fully enabled.
There are a number of layers available for Google Earth, including Places, Businesses, Panoramio, Wikipedia, Roads, Borders and Labels, and Terrain.
"Use Google Earth to explore the world from the palm of your hand. Fly around the planet with the swipe of a finger, as you view the same 3D imagery available in the desktop version. Search by voice for cities, places, and businesses. Browse layers of geographic information including roads, borders, places, photos and more”
Google Earth is a hefty app, taking up about 22.5 megabytes of space of your phone's storage. You can download by scanning or clicking the QR code to the left.

Apple And Android Dominate U.S. Smartphone Web Traffic

It is starting to look like just two smartphone platforms "matter" where it comes to use of the mobile Web: the Apple iPhone and the Android devices, a new analysis by AdMob suggests.
AdMob’s October, 2009 measurements show that the iPhone/iPod Touch and Android phones account for 75 percent of mobile Web traffic in the United States.
Apple devices continue to dominate, with 55 percent share, but Android users in October represented 20 percent of all activity, up from 17 percent in September, 2009.
The iPhone and iPod Touch grew their share from 48 percent to 55 percent share over the same period.
The Blackberry ’s mobile Web traffic share went down from 14 percent to 12 percent, and Palm’s webOS shrank from 10 percent to five percent.
On a global basis, the iPhone operating system now accounts for 50 percent of all mobile traffic, up from 43 percent the month before.
Android has an 11 percent global share, which makes it third globally after Nokia/Symbian’s 25 percent share.
Since Verizon launched the Droid about two weeks ago, Droids now make up 24 percent of all Android mobile Web traffic. The HTC Dream, which is the oldest Android device on the market, is the only Android device with more share, at 36 percent of Android traffic. Give it a few more weeks. The Droid is shaping up to be the most-popular Android device so far.
The data suggests that the BlackBerry, though a worthy enterprise device, continues to lag as a smartphone choice for users whose key applications lean to the Web.

Official Google Phone confirmed for early 2010?

Ever since Android was first vaunted, people have been asking for an official Google Phone; however the search giant has always said it was only taking the lead in software, not hardware. Now, according to TechCrunch’s sources, that’s all going to change: they claim that an official, Google branded handset will drop in early 2010, with the company dictating every element of hardware and software to put together their own interpretation of today’s smartphone.
Who’s actually responsible for for hardware construction is still unconfirmed, though despite rumors of HTC involvement TechCrunch are saying it’ll be a Korean firm that produces the Google Phone. They’re leaning toward LG, since rival Samsung produces several of the components in the iPhone, a deal could lead Apple to pressure them not to get involved with the Google handset.
According to the sources, Google had hoped to have their phone on the market by the 2009 holiday period, but that timescale has slipped. However we should expect a “big push” in promotion and advertising in January 2010 in the run-up to launch. No hardware or form-factor specifications are known as yet.

Google’s Android operating system is set for iPhone-trajectory sales over the next few years, Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney said in a report yesterday from Computerworld, and will be the second-ranking smartphone OS globally by 2012. Gartner predicts Android’s 
share of the smartphone market will grow to 14 percent from less than 2 percent in the next three years as Symbian’s slide from dominance continues.
That kind of performance would mirror Apple’s staggering success over the last two years. Apple launched its first-generation iPhone in the U.S. in 2007 and quickly took the worldwide market by storm; the iPhone OS enjoyed a global market share of 11 percent in the first quarter of 2009 and has watched its footprint continue to expand. But while there’s no denying Android’s momentum, overtaking Apple in just a few years seems like a monumental task.
Dulaney makes a compelling case: A slew of handset vendors are jumping aboard the Android bandwagon (largely at the expense of Windows Mobile), the platform has effectively grown its developer community, and it now has the backing of America’s largest mobile network operator. And Android is built on open-source technology, Dulaney noted, giving it a decided edge over Apple’s proprietary platform.
However, the iPhone remains the overwhelming device of choice for smartphone users, and is increasingly being offered by carriers around the world. And while Apple pretty much had the benefit of being a first mover in offering a consumer-friendly, Internet-capable smartphone, Android is battling it out not just with Apple but also with Research In Motion’s BlackBerry, Palm’s webOS and others. Android may appear to be an irresistible force, but the field is wide open in these early days of the superphone.

ARCHOS 5 Android Tablet Launched

Motorola's Android CLIQ Arrives

At an event on Thursday, Motorola announced its very first Android based device - the Motorola CLIQ. The phone, which would be made for T-Mobile, marks Motorola's entry into the Android platform. Will this be enough to boost the company's sagging fortunes? We will find that out soon.
The CLIQ is a decent Android device complete with a HVGA touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard and all the other "standard" fare that includes WiFi, GPS and even a 3.5mm jack. The 5 megapixel, autofocus camera takes care of the imaging part. Specs wise, the phone matches the features offered by its competitors - namely the Samsung Galaxy i7500, HTC Hero and the HTC Magic. The recently announced HTC Tattoo might pose some competition to the CLIQ as well. However, that would only happen if the CLIQ ever makes it out of T-Mobile and is offered SIM free.
The CLIQ happens to be the first Motorola device to feature its new MOTOBLUR solution. MOTOBLUR manages and streams together updates to contacts, posts, messages, photos and more from sources including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Gmail, and work and personal e-mail. The feature then delivers these updates to the home screen in easy-to-view streams so there is no need to open and close different mobile applications to keep up with the latest content.
The phone will be released in the fourth quarter of 2009 and while its pricing hasn't been officially revealed, it is expected to hover around the $399 (Rs.20,000 approx.) mark.

Weaker World Mobile Phone Sales but Smartphone 27% Higher in Q2, Says Gartner

Worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 286.1 million units in the second quarter of 2009, a 6.1 per cent decrease from the second quarter of 2008, according to Gartner, Inc. Smartphone sales surpassed 40 million units, a 27 per cent increase from the same period last year, representing the fastest-growing segment of the mobile-devices market. The iPhone market share grew a staggering 375%.
"Despite the challenging market, some devices sold well as consumers who would usually have purchased standard midrange devices either cut back to less expensive handsets or moved up the range to get more features for their money," said Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner.
"Touchscreen and QWERTY devices remained a major driver for replacement sales and benefited manufacturers with strong, touch-focused midtier devices. However, the decline in average selling price (ASP) accelerated in the first half of the year and particularly affected manufacturers that focus on midtier and low-end devices, where margins are already slim."
The recession continued to suppress replacement sales in both mature and emerging markets. The distribution channel has dealt with lower demand and financial pressure by using up 13.9 million units of existing stock before ordering more. Gartner expects the gap between sell-in to the channel and sell-through to customers will reduce in the second half of 2009 as the channel starts to restock.

Android Enterprise App Support “as Soon as This Year”

You thought Exchange support was as a big deal for Android? Well, enterprise-grade applications are also in the pipes for a future release of Android, according to GoogleVP Andy Rubin. 
Of course, Google’s attitude remains somewhat laissez-faire, riding primarily on the hope that manufacturers will do what they will to the Android source code for their handsets.
If Android wants a reasonable chunk of the enterprise market, manufacturers will have to make exceptionally good use of tose tools, especially if RIM keeps getting special treatment from Google with things like with the BlackBerry Apps Connector. Rubin says we could start seeing enterprise Android apps as soon as this year, although it depends largely on what manufacturers do.

Will Android 2.0 Be Released Later This Summer?

We hate to start the waiting game so soon, especially since we're just comfortable and enjoying Cupcake now, but the AndroidGuys have reason to believe that Android 2.0 Donut will be released later this Summer. The developers of The Weather Channel Android application have admitted that the next update to their application, slated for late summer, will be built for Android 2.0.
This could mean a few things: The Weather Channel could be jumping the gun with an Android 2.0-ready update or Android 2.0 will be released by the time The Weather Channel update is available. Obviously, we're pulling for the latter. In the meantime, we wouldn't start any Donut-related movements, after seeing T-Mobile bungle the Cupcake release, it could be months before T-Mobile even acknowledges Donut on the roadmap.

Sony Ericsson's Upcoming Android Phone

You can feel the presence of a new kid on the block...!!! Code-named Rachael, Sony Ericsson's Android based Device, currently in development phase, will hit the market later this year, according to information obtained by the Danish Mobil Magazine.
Everyone is aware for some time now that Sony Ericsson (SE) is working on a Google Android-based smartphone, but the company has placed the details under the sheets. However, pictures leaked by a Danish site appears to reveal snaps of what it looks like.
Now, we can review the details regarding the first Sony Ericsson Android device. The Android based device will be part of SE's XPERIA series, which so far includes the Windows Mobile-based X1 model.
The leaked information also reveals that the SE's upcoming Android phone featuring an 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. At the top of the phone a 3.5mm headphone jack and a miniUSB port are also present. No specific details on the phone's display size or resolution were released, but the Danish magazine says it has a pressure-sensitive touchscreen.
The Sony Ericsson Rachael, as the rumors go, will get powered by an extra-speedy 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 chip. It supports high definition video decoding and the phone is likely to sport a broadcast T Android based, Wi Fi, and GPS.
Everyone is aware for some time now that Sony Ericsson (SE) is working on a Google Android-based smartphone, but the company has placed the details under the sheets. However, pictures leaked by a Danish site appears to reveal snaps of what it looks like.
Now, we can review the details regarding the first Sony Ericsson Android device. The Android based device will be part of SE's XPERIA series, which so far includes the Windows Mobile-based X1 model.
The leaked information also reveals that the SE's upcoming Android phone featuring an 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. At the top of the phone a 3.5mm headphone jack and a miniUSB port are also present. No specific details on the phone's display size or resolution were released, but the Danish magazine says it has a pressure-sensitive touchscreen.
The Sony Ericsson Rachael, as the rumors go, will get powered by an extra-speedy 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 chip. It supports high definition video decoding and the phone is likely to sport a broadcast T Android based, Wi Fi, and GPS.
