X2 launches new tablet computer, dubs it the iTablet

Saturday, February 06, 2010

Fresh off the heels of Apple’s iPad launch, UK manufacturer X2 today announced the launch of a new tablet computer that they have dubbed the iTablet, according to several UK sites. A slick marketing move, though Apple might not think so.

The iTablet comes in either 10.2-inch or 12.1-inch sizes and includes an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, 250 GB hard drive, a 3G chip and runs Windows 7. Coming in at 35mm thick (Apple’s iPad is 13.4mm), the iTablet might seem a bit clunky. Though the reason behind the thickness makes sense, the devices offers USB 2.0 ports, HDMI out support and a 1.3 megapixel camera.

According to the company website, X2 manufacturers several different tablet computers and its clients are mainly in the industrial, commercial, military and government sectors. The company’s other tablet computers are much more rugged and enterprise focused than the newly launched iTablet.

While I commend X2 for trying to push into the personal computing space, the iTablet feels more like a glorified netbook based on its specs than the competitor to Apple’s iPad that the name might suggest.
